A short excerpt from our membership content about agents.
A single individual who refers you to a flight school and may or may not help you during your education.
In this section we will show you that most agents are not truly on your side. Agents often mislead you, because of their incentives. They are not honest with you when you first meet them and they often give you information about flight schools that are unrealistic and even flat out false. Agents, by the way the system is designed, cannot be a true source of support for you. Let me show you why.
Agents make their money by bringing students to the flight school they work with. When a student signs up at a school and makes a deposit for their training the agent is paid a commission. The amount of the commission can vary from school to school. Some schools pay an agent between $1,500 and $3,000 per student. Either way, the agent is incentivised to bring students to the school and make sure they give the school money. This creates a big problem for you, the student.
Since agents are incentivised to bring you to their school, they are going to need to convince you that their school is better than other schools. This means that agents will show you great looking quotes and marketing materials from the school and tell you about all the advantages you will have if you join their school. What you do not know is that these quotes, materials and promises are unrealistic and that you virtually always end up paying much more money than originally quoted. Agents know this and they use your lack of knowledge about the industry to lure you to their school.
Honesty & Information
Agents know how the aviation training industry works. They also know exactly how the school they work for operates. Yet, despite their understanding of the system, they present you with unrealistic promises and materials. They openly mislead you, just to sign you up, because that is the only way they make their money. I’ve worked with agents who knew that the quotes they showed their students are flat out lies. They knew it is impossible to finish the training within the quoted times, but they showed them to the students anyway.
The flight school industry is highly competitive. Schools all over the world are competing with each other for students. This is one of the reasons they are all trying to find ways to offer you a less expensive education. They know you are unaware of how the system works and in combination with agents they take advantage of that. The worst part about this is that it's always you who ends up paying for the agent. You may think: “How? The school is paying the agent.” That is not correct. The school knows that you will end up spending more money than they quoted you. The school knows that they can employ several tricks to get more money from you as your training progresses and this additional money ends up paying for the agent. In the end you will always pay for everything.

Just because a flight schools quote is cheaper than another, doesn’t mean you’ll end up paying less. To the contrary, the cheap quotes usually mean you pay quite a bit more.
A legal organization / business / enterprise that facilitates your entire training process for you either at their own flight school or by sending you to other flight schools.
Some agents work as part of a large agency. These agencies collect the money for your flight training themselves, directly from you and than outsource the training to flight schools across the world. While this seems to save you a lot of worry and work (Finding a school, applying for a VISA, preparing documents ec.) you are overpaying them for this service by a lot. Here is why:
Agencies, like any other business, have expenses. After they pay for the expenses they want to make a profit. Your money therefore needs to cover their expenses, their profits, the flight schools expenses and the flight schools profits. The flight school quotes the agency a price for your total program. Let's say this is $40,000. The agency will now charge their own expenses and fees on top of that, possibly charging you $55,000 or maybe even $60,000. Even if they only charge you $50,000 you are basically paying $10,000+ for the comfort of not having to worry about all the details of your education. Is this feeling of security worth thousands of dollars? We think definitely NOT. Especially, because PocketCFI will provide you with that feeling of comfort for free!
